Please give me the ins and outs of tipping while on a cruise.
There are three ways to pay tips. You can prepay, but I would not recommend that. You can have the tips charged to your room and/or your credit card, or you can pay in cash.
I like to have the tips charged to my room (which is thus charged to my credit card) and then put in a little extra cash in the envelope for those that deserve more than the standard tip. The envelopes are handed out on the last day.
Most of the cruise lines ask for $10 per person per day. Usually your room steward gets $3.50 per day per person, your waiter gets $3.50 per day per person, your assistant waiter gets $2.50 per day per person and 50¢ per day per person goes to the waiters and waitresses in the buffet.
If you order a drink you will find that 15% has been added to your bill as a tip. You can, if you want, increase this amount. Drinks are billed to your on-board account.
