    Cruise On A Budget

I have not gone on a cruise alone but have been on more than 20 cruises and have run into people who for various reasons were cruising alone. One lady we met was a widow and didn’t have anyone to cruise with her so she decided to go alone. Another gentleman we met recently on a cruise had booked with his wife but she got sick at the last minute and couldn’t come along. So he came by himself.

If you want to cruise alone the first thing you should know is that all cabins on all cruise ships are sold based on double occupancy; meaning at least two people per cabin. BUT, you can cruise alone in a cabin by simply paying the “single supplement” fare. That fare is generally about double the price of whatever cabin you select. Whenever you see a fare advertised for a cruise its per person based on two people going. If you want to cruise alone and not pay a lot of money then (1) book well in advance (like 9-12 months or more); (2) look for specials that the cruise lines offer; (3) go on a date when the cruise is the cheapest (cruise prices vary by date for the exact same cruise); (4) book the lowest priced cabin on the ship/available; which will be an inside cabin.

Once on the ship you will not have a problem meeting people and having a good time. You will meet people at dinner, in the show rooms, at the pool and gym, and on tours from the ship. In addition, almost every cruise has a singles get-together where people who are single and/or cruising alone can meet & greet. The singles meet & greet is normally held the first day or two of the cruise in a place like a disco or club or lounge.

You also need to consider the cruise line when you select a solo cruise; the average age of passengers do vary by cruise line. If you are 40 and under you need to consider going on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and/or Princess. Carnival and RC cater most to families and kids. If you are over 40 to 50 then consider Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity and/or Holland America. Holland America caters most to seniors 60 and over. So consider the cruise line so you’ll be more likely to find other singles/solo cruisers in your age group.

You can do some research at cruisecritic.com. Under the specialty cruising section click on solo cruising. Lots of people do it and have a great time.

you might want to do something else by yourself. I went on a cruise by myself after my divorce was final, and i had an OK time, meaning it wasn’t awful, it was relaxing but in hind sight I would have done a 4 or 5 day cruise, because 7 days was too much to do alone I was bored and i wanted to call my sister or my best friend but I couldn’t because it was 4.99 a min on the cell phone on the ship.

I wouldn’t have enough nerve to go on a cruise by myself because I’m a chicken, but if I had enough confidence to do it, I would def go on a cruise. I went a couple of years ago with some friends and had a blast! It would also be a great way to meet new people, unless you don’t want to meet new people, and just want to spend some time alone. All of your entertainment is on board, so no need to go anywhere. It’d be fun

I would think a cruise alone would be…a little more lonely because you see everyone with families and couples…I’d rather get away on an island or something

I’ve never gone on one alone, but if you wanted to get away, I think going alone on a cruise would be a bit awkward at dinner times, etc.

No. But I answered because I know people that have and they were very happy with the experience. Try a short one, you know? Drive that car and see how you like it.
